What We
Are Learning
Reading: Our 4th
graders have been working extremely hard on the ELA MCAS this week. They have been using all of their reading and
writing strategies that they’ve learned this year. They should be very proud of their hard
work!
Writing: Students have
been learning about perspective, or point of view. We read the book Officer Buckle and Gloria, which is told from a police officer’s
point of view. Students then practiced
writing the story from his police dog’s point of view. They had a lot of fun with this activity!
Math: We are finishing our unit on fractions and
will be moving on to decimals next. Even
though the chapter on fractions has been a rigorous one, the students have
shown a lot of progress. With their understanding of fractional numbers, we
anticipate the kids making a smooth transition into the chapter on
decimals. At home, remember to relate
decimals to money!
Social Studies & Writing In a
multidisciplinary activity, students will be researching the climate,
geography, industry, and natural resources of a region in the United
States.

What We Are Learning
Reading: Students are
enjoying the novel, Tuck Everlasting. They are exploring the theme of the book: Why
would or wouldn’t someone want to live forever?
If you can, read the novel yourself and discuss it with your child.
Science: Students have
been busy exploring weathering and erosion.
They are working in centers to learn about the causes and effects of weathering
and erosion.
Writing: Using an
acronym can help children to remember important information. Students will be using a “M-E-T-A-L”
organizer to help them plan their writing for Evidence Based Responses
(EBRs). Students will be using this
METAL organizer moving forward at Morse Pond School.
Math: Students have begun a unit on fractions. We continue to encourage the kids to
persevere and not give up, especially on multi-step word problems. Please help your child to see fractions in
their daily lives. Seeing real-world
examples can help make fractions more accessible for kids.
